The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) today (12/23) is expected to be in the range of 5,950pt โ 6,100pt, being propped by bargain huntersย Meanwhile, yesterday ย (12/22), the DJIA closed lower by 201 points or 0.7% to 30,016pt, while the S&P500 and the Nasdaq both ended lower by 0.2% and higher by 0.5%, respectively.

The JCI and the value of USDIDR closed meaningfully ย lower yesterday, and by consensus estimate , the reason is linked to the emergence of the new variant of COVID-19 virus now existing in the UK. The sell-offs was mainly due to profit-takings (remind : the JCI gained 10% MoM both in November and to December 21), although above the โnormalโ rate of usual heavy ย profit taking of between 1%-1.5%, in our note.
The reason is based on the fact that, at present, scientists have yet to determine the exact form of the new COVID-19 variant. ย World Health Organization states that the presence of a new variant of COVID-19 that appeared in the UK is a normal part of the virus mutation. In addition, scientist mentioned that current vaccines ย that have been already available for COVID-19 virus are flexible in nature to modify should new variant spreading necessitates. In short, to link yesterdayโs sell off of equity indices heavily toward the new variant of COVID-19 virus seems to be overemphasized.

The install of 6 (six) new names into current administrationโs cabinet is believed not yet being positively factored-in to the JCI.ย To the contrary, the appointment of new ministers may give a short-term negative influence to the equity indices, in our note, ย as two of the new ministers are to replace the predecessors who are charged with corruption.ย The last word ย only triggers stakeholdersโ worries and emphasize ย the history and complications ย on the topic in the country.ย Relatively higher corruption index (please see our report dated August 12) has put its weight on current relatively higher Gini Ratio index and lower GDP per capita, in our observe.
At the other end, yesterday ย the WTI price dropped by ย 2% to USD47.0/barrel vs. the previous one ย as mutant variant of the coronavirus in Britain revived concerns over demand recovery. Meanwhile, the USDIDR ย closedย at IDR14.289 ย vs. IDR14.250 ย the previous one.
