Morning,

The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) today (29/5) is expected to close in the red by around up to 1% over yesterday closing, in our estimate, mainly on investors worry on the impact of heightened trade disagreement between the US and China, to the global growth. The DJIA closed by 238 points or 0.9% to 25.348pt after US president Trump commented that he might increase tariff further for China goods. (The Trump administration has decided to raise tariffs on about $200 billion worth of Chinese exports from 10 percent to 25 percent, and plan to impose a 25-percent tariff on another $320 billion worth of goods). At the other end, China is keen to keep the negotiation to be fair for its side and has yet to give in to the US demands.

After registering a clear double digits economic growth during 2003-2010, China at end 2013 refocused economic growth to be more private-consumption driven as opposed to investment and export oriented one. End of last year, China private consumption made up around 40% of total GDP (vs. 60% global average) compared to 15% of total GDP in 2007. Being self-contained for China, is among the key to gain traction in world political map and thus bargaining power, in our view.

Investors might monitor progress on the trade negotiations between the US and China during the G20 leaders meeting in Osaka Japan on June 28-29.

We keep the following recommendations. These counters have been hit hard since the end of ย March this year and thus offer bargain opportunity both for trading and longer term investment purpose.
