Domestic stock market yesterday (1/9) cheered consumptionโs uptick in August as indicated by substantially lower month-on-month (MoM) deflation rate of 0.05% vs. 0.1% in July. ย The biggest contributors on the monthly August increment were Personal Maintenance, and Other Services, at 0.13ppt, and Education at 0.03ppt.
To remind, Personal Maintenance and Other Services account was added by the Central Statistic started to January this year to reflect the latest spending pattern and to include that of e-commerce development.ย New goods and services included in this item , among others, are childcare services, cell-phone accessories, power bank, strollers, suit-cases, and photo studio services.ย Effective January this year, 4 (four) additional Classifications were added to revise the previous 7 (seven) Classifications.
Meanwhile, on an annual basis, August CPI increased by 1.32% , which ย demonstrated a gradual decline since February this year at 2.98% YoY ย (March: 2.96% YoY, April: 2.67% YoY, May: 2.19% YoY, June: 1.96% YoY, and July: 1.54% YoY). ย Lower purchasing power as well as precautionary acts that arose from the Covid-19 virus spread are the main reasons behind the lower inflation rates, in our note.
The second contributor of August MoM lower deflation rates is the Education spending that contribute by 0.03ppt, as August is the start of the new school terms and payments mostly should be paid-up before end of the month.
The third contributor is Foods & Beverages Procurements, of 0.01ppt, as more as limitedย lock-down relaxation gradually intensified dining out activities.
Whether consumptions upbeat be maintained in the coming months ย depend, significantly, ย on the Covid-19 virus spread and handling, in our view.
At the other end, yesterday the WTI price closed at USD42.8/barrel as compared to USD42.6/barrel the previous one.ย Meanwhile the ย USDIDR ย closedย at IDR14.615ย vs. IDR14.554 the previous one.
